The Pasqual Maragall Foundation organizes in Barcelona the First Think Tank Meeting

11-13.02.09 | PALAU COLET | BARCELONA

On February 11–13, 2009 has taken place in Barcelona the first meeting of the group Think Tank on the Prevention on Dementia. This meeting, organized by the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute in collaboration with BIOCAT, has congregated nearly twenty Alzheimer experts of American and European centers.
The experts agree that Alzheimer’s and neurodegenerative diseases is becoming one of the main problems that public health systems face in Europe and North-America, not only in medical terms but also in societal terms. If we are not able to find solutions during the next decade, we will be heading towards an unsustainable system that couldn’t face up to the increasing cases.

This experts’ meeting has concluded that the only way to sort this problem out is through scientific research collaboration, combining efforts and working together. It seems to be clear that any single group or any single country will be able to reach this objective by itself. The intellectual inputs from the whole international scientific community are necessary, to sum up knowledge and resources.

So that the objective of the experts group is to carry out an action plan to develop methodologies to advance toward early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease before 2020. This Think Tank represents a first step to specify how this action plan will be.

Researchers from other European, American and Canadian centers will be invited to participate within next meetings. The group will meet again during the International Congress on Alzheimer Disease in Vienna on July 11, 2009, and later in Las Vegas and in Barcelona.
