27.05.2009 | 20.00 | BILBAO

Next Wednesday, 27 May, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper will offer the concert 'A Night at the Opera of Vienna' at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao, at 20.00 pm. Maestro Leopold Hager will be responsible for leading the orchestra with the soprano Ildiko Raimondi and the tenor Herbert Lippert. Ibercamera organizes the concert in benefit of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, in order to present the Foundation in the Basque Country.

The Vienna Volksoper (Vienna People's Opera), with a symphony orchestra and its own company of singers, was founded in 1898 at the behest of Emperor Franz Joseph and was soon advanced and developed to become one of the most important theaters in the Austrian capital.

The Volksoper has hosted masterpieces of the German repertoire, and in particular the popular Viennese genre per excellence operetta. There, Johann Strauss, Franz Lehar and Emmerich Kálmán premiered their most famous pieces and was in this theater where the most famous waltzes in history could be heard for the first time. In the Vienna of the late nineteenth century the waltz reigned everywhere. This music so festive, so joyful, so refined, continues even today, installed on the crest of popularity, as part of our imaginary.
