1.7.2008 | 19:00 | Saló de Cent, Barcelona's City Hall

In a massively attended event at the Saló de Cent de l'Ajuntament, the President received the city’s highest honour from Mayor Hereu.
Those in attendance included the head of the Catalan government, José Montilla, and foreign affairs minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, as well as the last four mayors of the city and many political figures and figures from civil society.

The commentary was provided by the former mayor and personal friend of the President, Narcís Serra. Serra went over various moments of the career of the recipient of the honour, emphasising that Pasqual Maragall had been “the most important mayor Barcelona had had in the last century”.

Pasqual Maragall expressed his gratitude for the honour, acknowledging those who had helped him over the years, the people of Barcelona and, in particular, his family and his wife, Diana Garrigosa. He ended his address with an emotional “I love you, Barcelona”.

Mayor Jordi Hereu brought the tribute to a close, highlighting the unparalleled and essential operation Pasqual Maragall had carried through to its conclusion in the city and repeating the quote from Shakespeare that Maragall had used during his terms in office: “The city is the people”.
